The New Year

I hope everyone had a great New Year’s Day.  I can’t believe it is 2012.  Wow!  This past year brought so many amazing things.  I learned so much and hope to continue to do so.  I am not an expert on anything and hope I never come across as trying to sound like one.

When I write about fostering I write about things I wish I had known and things I am learning along the way (along with the strange range of emotions that tag along).  When I write about motherhood I hope to convey the thoughts, fears, and craziness I experience.  I never want to sound like I have it together because I don’t.

This year I plan on tackling some new things in photography and will share that journey.  Because many of us are learning from each other.  I am not an experienced photographer with decades of experience.  I am a mom trying to fit learning this hobby passion into my hectic day with a limited supply of brain cells.

Some things I am going to do this year that I encourage you to do along with me are:

  • Pick one specific thing you absolutely want to learn this year and learn it.  It doesn’t have to be about photography.  It can be a foreign language, knitting, Krav Maga, who knows.  Just make it a priority to learn it.  Google about it and practice it however and whenever you can.  Tell at least one good friend you are trying to learn it, too.  That way you can be held somewhat accountable. ;)
  • Pick something you already know and dive deeper with it.  Stretch your abilities in that subject.
  • Pick something you are passionate about and use your voice to help it.  Whether you blog or not, you have a voice (your husband can testify to that).  Use it.  I am not suggesting you change your blog or anything like that.  Just start sharing, that’s it.
  • Join in an ongoing communal event.  That sounds vague, I know.  With photography I will be trying to participate as much as I can with Life with My 3 Boybarian’s P52.  Each week will have a theme.  It is much easier than a Project 365 (I guess 366 this year) since it is only one per week.  I also will make it a priority to join MCP Actions’ Project 12.  It is only once a month and has a theme.  This effort kind of raises the bar for creativity.  There is enough time to really think about an idea and run with it.  I hope to grow in my creativity.
  • Make your life and family first.  Blogging is always last to me.  It used to not be that way, but I learned the hard way.  My life and your life will go on without Mom Tried It.  Read when you can or want to and if you comment…that’s cool.  If not, that’s cool, too.  I get it.  I honestly do.  I subscribe to many, many blogs.  I will continue to read them, but I will honestly comment less often.  I know it is a cardinal sin in blogging.  So if you see my name less often in your comments, I am sorry.  I still read your blog and love you, and you will see me there just not every day.

So there you have it.  What things are you going to do this year?

  2. I think this is a great plan, and that last point is too true. You have to do what is best for you :)

  3. But my life won't go on...... Okay, it will. I've been setting a time for getting my posts written. I need to start doing the same for reading them.....

  4. Love this post Kim. I have been meaning to sit down and write out my goals and I need to just DO it. I was a bit wary of taking on a 366. I do shoot almost every day but I don't want it to feel like a chore. I'm curious to learn more about the challenges you mention. I'll check them out.

Here's to a beautiful year of new discoveries ;)

  5. Krav Maga...you are too funny! I bet I'm the only reader you have that even knows what that is! ;-)

Excellent advice, my friend. I might try joining P52. I think I can handle one picture once a week! And no biggie about the comments, I've kind of given up on that too. I need to get back to blogging for myself, not worrying about leaving a ton of comments....well, except for this one!
