Ninjabread Men

Yes, that title is correct. My awesome friend Karina from Mumma Made It did a blog post a while back and shared ninjabread cookie cutters.  I was in love.  So I found some on Amazon (here is a non-affiliated link to the ninjabread cookie cutters) and got them in the mail yesterday.

If you follow me on twitter you saw me tweet about them and share pictures.  Yes, I am a dork.  And to even further solidify my dork status, I am doing a blog post about them, too.

These are the ninjabread cookie cutters.  Don’t they just kick butt?

So I made some sugar cookie dough, rolled it out, and cut out the ninjas.  Now here is the part where many make Martha Stewart royal icing, but I bought this at Hobby Lobby…

Yes, I am a cheater.  It tastes good, it is already dyed, and you squeeze from the bottle (no messy transfer).  Feel free to make your icing however you choose.

Aren’t they just so cute??!!

2011-11-28_21-27-07_504

I did leave some unfrosted.

2011-11-28_21-26-49_85

My kids will use edible food markers to color and draw on their own ninjas, too.

These are going to be a huge hit at my house.  I have a feeling we will have ninja cookies very regularly. All of these pictures were taken with my phone, so they aren’t great, but this isn’t a photography post.  :P

Oh, and absolutely no part of this post is sponsored or endorsed in any way.  All my own weirdo opinions and favorite products.  Just sharing.

Need to think about Taxes?

Ugh, I know.  You are thinking about all sorts of things and taxes isn’t one of them.  But tax time is coming.  The end of the year means cut offs and deadlines.  Next thing you know you will have the deadline for turning in your tax forms.

My husband does our taxes every year.  Every single year he uses Turbo Tax.  So I thought I would share, especially for my friends that are stationed overseas, need to file an extension, or are foster parents.

Did you know that you can file an extension through Turbo Tax?  You can use form 4868 tax extension.  Military families stationed overseas have until June 15ht to file an extension, if needed.

Foster families can claim a foster child as a dependent if they have had that same child in their custody for over 6 months out of that year.  I did not know that before.

There are a lot of things I have found out along the way and wanted to share. I am by absolutely no means an expert on taxes or any financial management.  This is just shared information.  If you have questions you can find out information on government websites, through sites like Turbo Tax, accountants and financial advisors, and lawyers.

Do your own research to find the solution that works best for you.  We have always used Turbo Tax and I recommend them, so I am writing about them.  There are a lot of confusing terms and Turbo Tax breaks it down easily for me to understand.

Wow it is Black Friday!  I hope you all have survived shopping and are now peacefully resting.  I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and families and I look forward to seeing if there are some photos submitted this week commemorating Thanksgiving.  Misty and I email each other with out picks and it has proven to be quite funny, because we are so similar it is kind of scary.  We usually have duplicate favorites.  This week was no exception.  So here are our favorites.
Gorgeous landscape. Gorgeous colors. Gorgeous reflection. The clouds are stunning and really drew me deep into the picture. {Misty}
I love the soft tones and the shallow depth of field.  You can almost feel the crepe-like texture of the flower petals.  Well done! {Kim}
I instantly fell in love with this shot. Gorgeous lighting and such incredible details. What a cute little guy! {Misty}
This photo looks like a piece of art.  The textures and saturation make it something I would want on my wall.  Not traditional, but who says photography has to be traditional? I love this! {Kim}

How to Make a Camera Bag Insert

I know I have repeatedly shared links to awesome designers that have fantastic camera bags.  They are gorgeous.  Let’s face it, though.  Not all of us can (or want) to drop around $200 for a camera bag.  I have a camera case.  It looks like this.

Big Bertha

It works very well keeping my gear protected.  But I cannot carry that with me all of the time.  So here is how to turn any bag into a camera bag.

Supplies

You will need an empty cereal box (not really required, but helps for extra sturdiness), glue, 1 yard of fabric (I used flannel), scissors, marker, 1/2 yard of 1/2 inch thick foam.  If you sew, great then you just need basic sewing tools like thread and pins.  If you don’t sew, you can use hot glue or fabric glue.  I recommend some pins just to be safe.

Pick size

First cut out a piece of the cereal box the size you want your insert.  It helps to place it in the bag and put it up to your camera to make sure.  I have a big bag and a big camera, so mine pictured above is about 12 inches long and 9 inches high.  Now you can use the side of the cereal box as your side pieces, but check the height and width of your camera to make sure it will fit.  I have a 7D and my camera is just too big to handle that width.  So I just cut wider pieces for the sides.

Glue board to foam

Now lay your pieces onto the foam and draw around the cardboard.  Now cut out all of your foam pieces.  If you plan on using the board inside your insert, then you need to glue the board to your foam.  I used hot glue.  The foam can stand well on its own and you may decide the board makes the insert too bulky, so it is not required.  I am just freakishly protective of my camera.

Cut fabric

Next lay your foam pieces on top of your fabric.  Your fabric should still be folded in half like it came when you bought it.  DO NOT cut the fabric the same size as your foam!  You will want to leave an inch allowance on every side.

Make sleeves

Sew or adhere your fabric together.  Remember: the right sides together.  So if you have a print, you need to sew/glue the correct sides facing each other.  Just sew 3 sides of each piece together.  Turn the pieces inside out (this makes them actually right side out).  Now slip each piece into the fabric sleeves.  Sew or glue shut.

Pin and sew

When you have all of your pieces in their sleeves you can take the bottom middle piece and pin the two large side pieces to it.  The extra fabric you allowed on the sides will work great to allow for this seam.  Remember corresponding sides together.  If you are using the board, you want to make sure the padding is on the inside and the board is on the out.  I pinned mine so the seam where I sew (or glue) will be on the outside.  It will help the insert maintain its shape.

Now sew/glue the big sides on.  Then attach the end pieces.  I don’t have pictures of me sewing, sorry.

Divider

I did make a divider, too.  I used a piece of cardboard and foam the same width as the insert.  You can adjust the height.  I made mine a tad taller to compensate for a longer lens to be carried in the insert, too.  I cut out fabric allowing the extra space on the sides, but added enough space at one end to put a “lid”.  So I made a really long fabric sleeve and put the divider foam into it.  Then I added a square piece of foam.  I sewed it shut and then pushed the foam apart and made a seam.

Foldover divider        Divider indside

Here is the insert with my divider.

I also made my camera a weird little pillow.  I just took two pieces of scrap foam and then made a fabric cover for them.  Now I can lay my camera on its side with the lens attached and not worry about pressure being put on the mount.

2011-11-17_14-20-40_484

Here is my camera inside the insert.  I have the divider in there along with another lens.

Inside tote

Here is my insert inside my tote.

Bag

So there is my nice new “camera” bag, that doesn’t have to stay a camera bag.  I got a big tote because I wanted to be able to carry my camera and still carry all of my regular purse/diaper bag stuff.  I got this tote at Target for $29.99.  The materials for the insert cost less than $10.

The best part is that any bag I own (or come across and a thrift store) can now become a camera bag.  Oh, and then un-become a camera bag.  I am going to make another insert that is smaller to just carry my camera without extra space for another lens.  At this price I can make a bunch!

I hope you enjoy this.  Please feel free to email me if you have any questions at all.

SHOOT. EDIT. SUBMIT. 11.18.11

Here we are again at Friday. Can I get an Amen?  Winking smile
It’s time for SHOOT. EDIT. SUBMIT.

Last week there was a big drop in participants.  I want everyone to feel welcome to join in.  If it is your best shot of the week, show it off!  I know that I want to see it, so link up.

Even with less entries last week, it was still pretty hard to narrow it down.  Misty and I joked that we need to start doing honorable mentions.  We did narrow it down to these:

Pretty PixI love the fall colors and the way the light is hitting the leaves in the foreground. The composition on this is well thought out.  {Kim}

Perfect silhouette choices and gorgeous clouds and colors! Impressive all the way around.  {Misty}

Um...what isn't to love about this? If this was a photo of my child it would become the largest canvas print they make. Beautiful!  {Kim}

My heart just melted all over my keyboard when I saw this photo. Such beautiful innocence. Mix that with the gorgeous colors of the falling leaves and you have perfection.  {Misty}
Congratulations, winners! Grab your button!
And this week's #1 winner is:
birds
This photo gives me chills.  It is straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.  Any photo that immediately strikes you with such emotion is fantastic.  I love how you can see the details on the birds wings.  {Kim}

Congratulations on being chosen as this week's #1 photo. Grab your button! You will be in the running to win a fabulous prize at the end of the month.

Gift Ideas for Photography Nuts

While we all would love a nice assortment of fast lens that are professional grade, let’s face it most of us do not have the resources to grant us that.  So a 24-70 L series lens may be on your wishlist for Christmas, but chances are Aunt Gertrude doesn’t buy $1000+ lenses for gifts.

So here is a list you can share with friends and family that are great gift ideas for the shutter bug.  You can even “accidentally” email it to your husband.  ;)

Reflector

Reflector - this baby is ultra versatile and helps direct natural light where you need it.  Plus it folds up and is easy to carry around.  With a price under $15, definitely a great gift to give or receive.

Flash

Flash - While this is a manual flash, the price is fantastic and if you shoot in manual mode already you will be fine.  You can control the percentage of the flash.  This flash is under $75.  Used with an off-camera set up below you are set!

Flash set up

Flash stand and umbrella - this set is portable and works with any flash (even the one above).  So you can take this with you and supplement some light out in the field.  Using this wireless trigger system you are all set and for under $60 combined!

Camera Strap -  Yes, your camera came with one.  But does it feel good?  Probably not.  Does it reflect your style?  Probably not.  Does it look manly?  Um, probably.  Here are some beautiful straps handmade by the awesome Gina (who is a blogger and photography junkie).  She has a new business venture called Stylish Beach Bum and has beautiful straps at very affordable prices.  Head over and check out her selection!

lens pen

Lens Pen - An easy-peasy way to clean your lens with compact style and fits about anywhere.  These babies are less than $5!

lens attachments

Macro Attachments - You all know I LOVE these!  I use them often and not just for macro shots.  I will put the +2 attachment on to get a little more range out of my lens.  You will have to get them in a filter size that is compatible with your lens. These are fabulous. At under $15 you cannot go wrong.

Battery grip

Battery Grip - While this is an accessory that most people associate with professionals, it doesn’t have to be.  There are many off brand grips that are good quality and come highly recommended.  You will have to find one that is compatible with your camera model, but they are around only $50!

bag

Camera Bag - While there are so many camera bags out there, these camera bags offer style along with function.  Epiphanie has a really fantastic selection.  At a price tag of $155 and up, you might want to keep these on a list for extra close people.  There is some sticker shock, but they are gorgeous and functional.

P.S. These bags aren’t just for photographers.  They are a great multipurpose bag or diaper bag.

actions

Actions or Presets - Oh my, my heart starts to flutter just thinking about it.  Actions and presets make life easier for editing mages.  You still have creative control to tweak things, but it is all packaged up nice and neat for you.  Think of them as cake mixes for Photoshop and Lightroom.

Jodi at MCP Actions has a wide selection of actions and presets.  Her thoroughness is amazing.  She offers actions for PSE and Photoshop starting at $30.  Check out her new line of presets for Lightroom and ACR.  The reviews have been outstanding.

You know I use a lot of Paint the Moon’s actions so I couldn’t leave her out.  Annie offers such artistic actions for Photoshop and PSE.  Packages start at $35.

Both of these sites offer gift cards, so you don’t have to worry about which set to purchase.

classes

Training - Last but definitely not least.  I don’t know a single person that says they know how to do everything that has to do with photography.  Knowledge helps you develop that skill.  If your wish list is full of “things” than you should look into some classes.  You will find that with the right know-how you probably won’t need those things.  I have a long wish list of classes I would like to take.  Some are about editing, some are about photography.  Kent Weakley offers a great selection of photography classes.  They are a work at your own pace format.  Each week there is a new topic within that class category.  He has night photography, composition, and other topics.  Classes start at under $60!!!

**This post is not sponsored in any way. I was not approached by any of these companies.  These are products/services I have (and love) or would love to have.  All research was done by me and these are my own recommendations.  No links are affiliated. **
