Creeping Up on a Frog

I told you yesterday how I haven’t been shooting as much because it is so stinking hot.  Well it is a good thing that even my road has a lot of stuff I can shoot.  You saw my lily pad bloom yesterday from one of the ponds on my road.  Well today I am sharing this guy.

frog perched

He lives in a different pond on my neighbor’s land.  As I approached the pond, I saw him perched on this tube.  I got all excited.  Then I realized he would jump if I got too close.

So I did what any crazy person person with a passion for photography would do.  I laid down and crawled with my elbows (being extra careful with my new camera in hand) towards the pond.

You read that correctly.  I was doing a belly crawl, army crawl, whatever you want to call it to get a picture of a frog.

So I was definitely “Down Low”.

I just laugh at the idea of my neighbors looking out their window to find me doing this.  They would think I lost my mind.  We are much younger than any of the other people on our road.  Our kids are younger than their grandkids, if that gives you any indication.  But no one called my husband wondering what his batty wife was doing, so I guess no one saw me.

You guys know I have no problem looking stupid. I did it for years with no real reason, so getting a good shot is reason enough for me.

In case you want the specifics. I shot this with a 55-250mm lens at a focal length of 250.  The frog was 2.5 meters from me. The aperture was f/5.6.  ISO 3200 and shutter speed was 1/8.  There is a little more noise than I would like, but I didn’t want to lose any sharpness on this guy, so no post processing noise reduction.

  1. Awesome shot!

I am giggling quietly imagining an old couple sipping tea at the window saying "Young people of today, why in my day we could..."

  2. That's a great shot! Worth the trouble and the risk of being seen.

  3. LOL Totally laughing at the thought of you crawling around!

But still, a great picture and totally worth it! And yes the dork in me seriously considered writing "Toadally" worth it.

  4. That last comment made me giggle. Nicely captured, considering the high ISO, not that much noise is showing on my screen.

  5. I completely love that frog. And I admire your dedication. We have chiggers here in NC, and I'm not about to slither along on the ground in pursuit of the perfect shot - I'm chicken! But your shot... hmm... almost makes me consider it!

  6. Ha! That is too funny! I did the same thing trying to get down and take pics of a neighbor's flower one time. Oh well, as long as you had your camera in your hand, they should know...hopefully ;-)

Great shot. I like the contrast on this one.

  7. Oh just amazing! Wow! Do I ever love this.
He's beautiful. That's a great shot. My neighbors probably think I'm batty too crawling around the yard taking pictures. LOL

  9. Very cool. I love the thought of you army crawling for a picture and then a previous poster saying TOADALLY was so funny. I must not have a good eye for seeing noise, because I don't see it. I especially love how green this picture is - my favorite color :) That little guy is so crisp. Very good shot!

  10. Frogs are so cute! I love them! I also love your narrative of capturing the shot... sounds familiar! I don't notice the noise in this, by the way :)

  11. This is great!! And a big LOL at your crawling!! :)

ISO 3200?!?! I'm so jealous! I can shoot at up to a whopping 400, after that the noise is ridiculous. What camera do you have?

  13. That is a fabulous shot! You know, I've been finding myself doing weird things to get a great shot too. Photography is sooo addicting that it absolutely does make you do funny stuff!

  14. Holy crap! Your camera really can handle a high ISO with little noise. Mine starts showing when the ISO is at 800. I have the Canon Rebel. Did you use a texture on this pic or is this the noise?

  18. LOL! What a great capture! It was totally worth it! :0) I never thought of it that way, but, sure, I am in the same boat, I've looked like an idiot for no reason more times then I care to admit. So why not look like an idiot for a great shot!?! I love that philosophy! Thanks so much for your encouraging comment on my blog!

  26. Ok my favorite blog friend...Everyone is talking about the ISO being so high talking about the noise in the photo which I don't see any noise at all...I'm surprised I even know what that means...I'm such an amateur...I put MY camera on the setting you mentioned and all I got was a white picture...What am I doing wrong? BTW-I love that you put the specifics about the picture...It helps me...My ISO only goes to 1600, but I don't think that's the problem for the white picture can you help? Also, I would like to sign up for your "Foto Friday" and even have the little thingy on my blog, but I don't know where I sign up or the rules...Sorry, if I'm a pain...Thanks!
