How many of you ladies bought your husband poker chips within the past 5 years? A lot of us did. And I bet your husband doesn’t play with them any longer.
Well, don’t get rid of them. Use them with your kids. No, I don’t mean teach your kids to gamble. They are great for preschoolers and toddlers (with close supervision, because they can get put in mouths).
No matter what developmental level your children are at, you will be able to incorporate all of your children in poker chip play.
You can have them sort by color (builds cognitive skills).
You can have them place them back into the holder or case (builds motor skills).
Your children can count them. These are great for learning to count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.
Or just some good old fashioned stacking (develops hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills). You can build stacking patterns with preschoolers.
Of course after stacking, nothing beats some demolition!
These can make a big mess, but the clean up is fun. You can even get out a dump truck to help it along. :-)

This is genius! Why didn't I think of this before? Duh, it's so simple. Great idea, and thanks for mba making me feel like an idiot. J/K.
ReplyDeletewe had poker chips for our kids as well when they were little there were so many things you could do with them , they seemed unbreakable and were very inexpensive
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Though, my husband does actually use his and gets irritated when the kids play with them. LOL
ReplyDeletePatterns, measuring (non-standard units: how many poker chips long is this teddy bear? The remote?),geometry, write numbers on the chips with permanent markers to make number sentences or practice with ordering, one less/more, one-to-one correspondence etc. So many possibilities! Thanks for the idea :)
