How to Make a Tutu

11-10-10 106

Let me start off by saying that I know this is not an original idea.  These things are all over Etsy and tutorials are on so many sites that I don’t know who to link to give credit to.

BUT, they are all on crafty sites.  So many of you like to do crafts with your children, but admit that you aren’t that crafty.  So this is me sharing the tutus I made and trying to convince you that you can, too.

You will need a yard of elastic (not really a yard, but it’s better to have too much than not enough) and 10 yards of tulle.  I chose two different colors, so 5 yards of each.

11-10-10 001

Take a piece of elastic and measure around your child’s waist.  Sew the ends together.  The NO SEW option is to just tie the ends together in a good knot.  It will work, I promise!

11-10-10 037

Then take your tulle and lay the entire piece of fabric out.  Now fold/roll it about 4 inches wide.

11-4-10 001

Now take your sharpest scissors and cut up both sides to make 4 inch strips.  Trust me, this is waaaay better than cutting 10 yards into 4 inch strips.

11-4-10 004

11-4-10 005

Since my daughter is little, I cut off about 4 inches from the end with the fold.  You can just cut about an inch off if your child is taller (that is what is pictured above).  Charley wears a size 3T, if that helps.

11-10-10 004

Now take a strip of tulle and tie it in a square knot on the elastic.  Put the middle of the strip on the elastic and tie.

11-10-10 043

It is going to look pretty silly, but it builds up to something cool.  On a side note, if you want your tutu to stand out and be extra poofy like this one, you need to tie the knot like I did on the flat part of the elastic.  If you want your tutu to lay nice and pretty, you will need to tie the knot on the edge.

11-10-10 044

One way to easily hold the elastic while knotting the strips is to just slip it on your leg up to your thigh.  Like a giant garter.

11-10-10 005

Since I did two colors, I tied two strips of white then two strips of pink.  I continued this until the entire elastic band was covered.  This took me about 30 minutes.

11-10-10 047

Guess what?  You’re done!  This tutu was such a hit with Charley that she wore it to pick up Cole from preschool.  Another mom saw it and asked me to make one for each of her daughters.  I made theirs pink and purple.  Her daughters love to play princesses and fairies.

11-10-10 009

Tutus aren’t just for being dancers.  Tell that to her, though.

You can easily make this yourself.  I bought my tulle at JoAnn Fabrics.  Tulle is rarely on sale, but you can use the 40% coupon they always have.  You can get one in the front of the store with their current flyer.  My store has tulle for $1.43/yard.  Using the coupon I got all of the fabric I needed for just $8.58.  Then you can buy elastic by the yard.  Mine was only 80 cents.

So this tutu cost me less than $10 and took less than an hour to make from everything in the store bag to everything on my daughter.  Honestly, you can do it.  What a great gift this could be!

My Favorite Holiday Memory

I would like to invite you all to head over to The Mother Huddle.  I wrote a guest post about my favorite Christmas memory (and I shared a recipe).  By the way, there is a picture of me when I was little with my giant poofy orange hair.

So nothing to see here folks, move along (to The Mother Huddle, that is).

Activity To Do When It's Dark

Judging from the news feed on Facebook and Twitter, I know I am not the only mom that despises daylight savings time.  So what do you do with your kids when it is dark at 5:00 pm?

I have one idea.  Use these…

 11-4-10 027

You guys know I LOVE window crayons.  They work great on mirrors and windows.  The colors are so vibrant and true (no Crayola did not ask me to write this).

 11-4-10 018

So I drew some shapes and some letters (upper and lower case) on sheets of paper with a marker.  I taped the paper to the outside of the windows.

 11-4-10 022

I had the kids trace the shapes and letters.

 11-4-10 024

Cole even took the opportunity to turn the circle into a face.  :-)  I loved being able to talk with Charley about the shapes and the colors.

 11-4-10 026

The fact that it is dark outside makes it easy to see the colors really well.  The kids started drawing and doodling.  We had a great time.

11-4-10 030

So get some Crayola Window Crayons (if you don’t have any).  It is $4.00 of fun in a box!  This is not a sponsored post.  I just really love these things and you will read about them again soon.

Oh, I have to share this with you.  Cole drew this “sign”.  He told me, “It’s a no bees sign, Mommy.  Because they shouldn’t be in here stinging us.”

11-4-10 028

Cole drew the letter “b” with a circle around it and if you look closely you can see a line going through it (from top to bottom, not diagonally).  Get it?  No "b’s” (bees)!  I thought it was so cute. ;-)

French and Indian War Battle Reenactment

Last month we went to a nearby fort to witness the reenactment of a battle.  It was really neat!  I have never been to a reenactment before.
 10-18-10 051
This battle was part of the French and Indian War.
 10-18-10 047
There were people dressed up at camp.  Do you see the teepee in the background?
 10-18-10 045
The camp was a great representation of that time.
10-18-10 056
There were men off to battle.
  10-18-10 057
10-18-10 050
We pretty much relaxed and watched the battle and covered our ears as the canons boomed.
10-18-10 046
The kids did have fun with some seasonal decorations, though.

Have you ever been to a battle reenactment?  What battle was it?

Say WHAT? : The Toilet Tomato

saywhat

“Why is there a tomato on the toilet?”

My kids love to eat fruits and vegetables.  I mean love them.  They love to go into the fridge for a snack and raid the crisper.  Cole and Charley will grab a Roma tomato and eat it like an apple.

So I walked into the bathroom the other day and saw a half-eaten Roma tomato setting on the toilet tank.

That is when I said it.  Something I never thought I would say (or have to say).

What crazy things have come out of your mouth lately?

Creating BIG by drawing BIG

I want my kids to do things BIG.  I want them to live big, love big, give big, have big hearts and big minds.  So why not create big, too?

Did you know your local newspaper will sell rolls of paper to you?  Did you know that you can get different grades of it?

11-4-10 013

My local paper sells this roll for $1.00.  Yep, $1.00!  So call your paper and see how much they sell it for.

You can do all sorts of stuff with it, but this time I used it for plain old drawing – BIG style.   I rolled out some in the dining room and gave the kids some markers.

 11-4-10 015

They started off drawing small things.

11-4-10 014

Then things began to grow larger and larger.

11-4-10 016

The first small drawings became mere parts of the BIG picture.

They drew entire scenes of life.  It was fantastic!  Cole even drew a cat that got rescued and went to a home that needed a cat to love.  How sweet is that?!

And what does a life scene from a 4 year old and a 2 year old have in it?  Mommy.

11-4-10 017

Cole drew me.  Anatomically correct too.  Wasn’t that nice of him?

My loving husband just had to point out the fact that my breasts in the drawing are not near the top.  They are more in the middle region.  Wasn’t that nice of him?

Adopt US Kids Twitter Party for National Adoption Month

I think you all know how I have a special spot for children in the foster care system.  I think you all know how I hope that all eligible children find permanent homes through adoption.  So it makes sense that I absolutely LOVE AdoptUSKids.org!
adoptuskids
AdoptUSKids.org posts children eligible for adoption across the country through the foster care system.  I love what they do!
November is National Adoption Month.
To raise awareness about adoption (not just through the foster care system) AdoptUSKids.org and Amy at Resourceful Mom are having a twitter party on Thursday, November 4th from 2:00 – 3:00 pm EST.
I would LOVE to see you there.  You know I will be there!  This is my third AdoptUSKids twitter party.  You can read about the first one that helped me find my way to the foster care system on my guest post over at Real Life
Here are people to follow on twitter for the party:
@AdoptUSKids
@ResourcefulMom
And if for some strange reason you do not follow me, I am @momtriedit.

If you have never participated in a twitter party before, here are some tips.  Every tweet you write should have the hashtag #AdoptUSKids so you can stay in the conversation and others can find you.  The easiest way to follow a twitter party is to use Tweet Grid (just my opinion).
I hope to see you at the twitter party!  Every child deserves a permanent home and a forever family.  Help us raise awareness.
