Writing in Flour

This concept is nothing really new, but it is the first time we have done it.  There are so many variations that can be done.  My suggestion is to keep with the flour, though.  You will see why.

First get a container that is wide and flat.  I used a cake pan for my son and a reusable storage container (for sandwiches) with my daughter.  Just put some flour in and you are set.

The kids were a bit surprised and confused by me placing the flour in front of them.

I cut some paper and drew shapes, numbers, and letters on them.  I put them out and asked him to draw them in the flour.

He had so much fun drawing these shapes.  Oh, and then came the experimenting and playing.

Now here is the part where you will appreciate the fact that you used flour and not sand.  Because shortly after these pictures were taken, the flour went in the hair.  And flour just shakes out.  :-)
This activity is fun learning for any age or stage.  The flour has a soft, fluffy texture and makes a great sensory project.  So those of you with a preschooler and a toddler can easily do this.  For an easy clean up, just take this activity outside.  It is a ton of fun and great for learning.  Try it.

  1. Hee hee, we've done flour. We've also done a few other things. Shaving cream is also a good one because you can then use the shaving cream to clean the table, I've done that after a few especially messy paint projects.

  2. I haven't done flour yet...we used shaving cream last week. We did that outside which was good b/c it turned into a shaving cream war! This week I was going to try salt, but now I may do the flour instead...have you ever used salt, Kim?

  10. I love this idea and will share with my daughter who will be returning as day care teacher very soon. She always talked about the sand being so messy and getting everywhere flour would be so much easier to use

  11. I like the outside idea - I hate cleaning up flour from the floor - it's so slippery!

  13. Corn meal works well as an alternative too! We do shaving cream a lot and salt occasionally, but I really need to get the flour out more often. Thanks for reminding me!
