Punch Ball Baseball

1-6-10 006 We try to do some unusual things in our home to stay sane.  We do our best to not get cabin fever.  This is one of our favorite past times.  It started when I was suffering (I mean suffering) from morning sickness with my daughter’s pregnancy.  I would just sit on the couch and do this with my son.  Here is what we do.

You just take a regular punch ball and throw it so your child can hit it with a bat.  That’s right.  We use plastic wiffle ball bats and other foam bats.  The punch ball works great because it is just a big balloon.  It floats and slows down quickly.  It shouldn’t break anything or cause much trouble at all.  Here we are playing some.  This video clip is after we had been playing hit it and run to chase after the ball.  I had my son “run the bases” so we could record this.

This could easily be implemented into a fun way to do some studying.  You could ask a question after your child hits the ball and they get to advance to the next base when they get it right.  Perfect for spelling or math tables.
It is so much fun and burns off some energy.  We have done a volleyball variation as well.  We used the couch as the net.  We would just volley the punch ball to each other over the couch.  We would try our best not to let it hit the floor.  We would also count as we hit it.  Try it.

Beating cabin fever and playing with my kids, gives me a Ton of joy.  That is why I linked this post with other great ones at  Just for the Joy of It on Good, True, and Beautiful.  :-)

  1. That is a great idea! My son would love this! Thanks for posting it. I love your video also. Your son is sweet.

  2. Oh Kim, I think you may have saved my day!!!! It has been freezing outside and mt three year lod has hit his limit of inside time. He has a huge room so this would be sooooo fun for him. Loved the video by the way, he is adorable!

  3. That's a great idea and one I never would have thought of! So glad you shared it ('cause this cold snap seems to be sticking around!)

Good Toss by the way -- I don't think you could hit him on the head like that if you tried!! Very cute!

  4. Great idea. I've been trying to think of ways to get fit for you in all that cold weather. Maybe make your own version of the Candy Land DVD game with pieces of construction paper, and you can take turns running to the different colors. I have a couple of ideas I'm still mulling over before suggesting.

  5. Ha ha ha, I love how he says "No" to trying it again! Isn't that funny, I bet if the camera wasn't on, he would have kept playing :-)

  6. That's great! We'll have to try that during our long summer months when it's way too hot outside to even consider stepping out of doors. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Oh yeah the boys would love this ... LOL
