Festive Fall on a String

blog 139 I got this idea from all of the great pumpkin topiaries that are being featured on too many blogs to list (but here is one at We are THAT family) and from an idea in last month’s Better Homes and Gardens.  They had real pumpkins hanging on shepherds hooks in the yard.  I liked both ideas, so I combined them.  Oh, and I did this super cheap.  It was under $5!  I went to a craft store and got styrofoam pumpkins to put on a string (I used some on hand twine).

This is the part my son really liked doing with me.  You need to push a stick completely through your pumpkin at any angle you want the pumpkin to hang at.  I used the handle of an art paint brush.  It worked perfect because it was not sharp enough for the little guy to hurt himself and long enough to do the trick.  Do this to the others and string them along.

I used more twine to make a bow at the bottom, but you can do so much to make it your own style.  I was very tempted to put leaves and berries in between the pumpkins and use cute ribbon to decorate it, but the whole point of me doing this was to stay on a shoe string budget.  I used what I had on hand (other than the pumpkins).  So if I had that stuff, I would have used it in a heartbeat.  This was really fun and I have a neat decoration for years to come that was easy and inexpensive.  Try it.

Do you hoard crafty stuff like ribbons and other accents?  We aren’t going to judge you.  We might be jealous, but never judgmental.

  1. Don't hate me....but YES, I do hoard them! Even little pieces! I have tons of ribbons, raffia, pieces of fabric, etc. Ya never know when you might need them ;) Me and the kids used to do lots of Xmas crafts..but lately, it seems that "life" has gotten in the way :( I really need to get back into it. YOU are inspiring me!

  2. It sounds cliche to say "you never know when you might need it", but there are too many times I have gotten rid of things only to have to go out and buy them again!

So yes, my entire linen closet is full of scrapbooking and craft items. Ribbons, buttons, paper, trinkets, etc. And my sunroom has 4 sets of shelves full of fabric, paints, fabric dying items, and other crafts!
