At this point you have two options. You can carve it like you would a jack-o-lantern, or you can just paint a face or object on it. I did both. We liked the painted version much better.
Now place your turnips on the end of your flashlight. Viola! Fun turnip flashlight torches! The painted turnips seem to glow more than the cut one. My kids were running all over the living room twirling their flashlights. It was a huge hit! The best thing is that turnips are in season and I got mine for a quarter each! Try it.
What vegetable have you never eaten, not even tried?

What a cool looking tip! My sons would absolutely love this! I guess I am going to the grocery store today to get a few turnips. :-)

that is so cool and super fun Ithink I remember seeing this many years ago
ReplyDeleteYea, it is supposed to be an old Irish tradition that has been modified. I saw it and couldn't pass up doing it!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cute idea! I'm gonna have to try that.
ReplyDeleteNever tried - beets, brussel sprouts, turnips! There's probably some more. Neat idea. :)
ReplyDeleteDid you know that Jack-o-Lanterns were originally carved out of turnips because of their popularity in Ireland? This is a cute idea, now besides the spider hand (another one of your ideas) I need to find some time tomorrow to carve a turnip for my flashlight.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! I have a fun, yet inexpensive, learning activity to share with you and your readers!
