Do you remember when you were a kid and you had a pen pal? I loved getting mail for myself, and opening it find a letter written just for me from my friend. Not just any friend I could call on the phone (at that time) or run outside and play with, but my pen pal! My teacher coordinated pen pals for my class with another teacher across the country. Nowadays, you would get in trouble for giving out personal information, or your child could be corresponding with some pervert. I have a way to share your childhood experience with your kids. I think pretty much all of us are on a social networking site, such as Facebook. I have reconnected with my high school and college friends through Facebook. Many of them have children and a few live far away. Get with your friends from the past to exchange addresses and let your kids be pen pals. You already know the family, but don’t ever visit, so it is a brand new friend for your child. Since you know the parent(s), you will feel a lot more comfortable with the situation. You and the other mom can keep track or monitor the correspondence between the kids. Try to keep it a true pen pal, so the kids can practice handwriting, grammar, and letter structure. If they become email or IM buddies, it will all just become acronyms. LOL. ;-) This would be especially great for all of those homeschooling mom readers. Try it.
Where was your childhood pen pal from?
