Hand-Me-Down Makeovers

Do you have hand-me-downs from an older sibling (or ones given to you) that have stains on them?  Those stupid stains that don’t ruin the shirt, but make it a “not out in public” shirt.  These usually immediately get dubbed “play clothes” or used as dust rags, or even thrown away.  Not so fast!  Here is a fun craft project to do with your kids and increase their wardrobe.  Take those shirts that have those faint, set in stains and cover the stains with paint.  Yep, paint.  Put a paper bag inside the shirt to keep paint from bleeding through to the back.

Get some really cheap sponges, draw some shapes on them.  Girls are easy, hearts stars, etc.  For boys you can do tools, trucks, etc.  Cut the sponges in those shapes and dip them into paint.  Press the sponges on the shirt (covering those dumb stains) and you have a shirt that your kid is super proud of.  Of course they are, they helped make it!  No longer just a “play shirt”, set that bad boy out to wear to school tomorrow.

What is the absolute worse hand-me-down you have ever gotten?

  1. I got my older cousin's hand-me-downs. One time I got a box from my aunt with bras and panties in it. PANTIES!!! So gross! We threw those away.

  2. Great idea! That's better than throwing away an otherwise-good shirt, and it's more frugal than buying new.

  3. Great idea! I am actually digging out clothes for winter now! This is really timely!

  4. This is super cute and having 2 boys this will be so great thanks

  5. That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing on Fri. Favorites!
