I love to bake with my son. He does almost everything when we bake, even though he is just three. We were making cupcakes on Wednesday and when it came time to pour them into the liners I had to tell him that Mommy has to do this part. He knows this, but still got a disappointed look. I immediately thought there must be a way for him to help with this step without creating a huge disaster. I remembered my pancake mix tip (you new readers can check it out here), and thought how can I incorporate that idea into cupcake batter? I suddenly remembered my daughter's bottles in the cabinet (we stopped using them 2 months ago). I got one out, cut the end off of the nipple, and filled it with cupcake batter. I handed it to my son and told him to squeeze it into the liners. He tried it and his smile reached from ear to ear. He was so proud to be helping with a part he has never gotten to do before. It did not make a mess at all and was much easier than trying to pour from the bowl. I had to refill the bottle a couple of times, but this is something I am going to do when I bake cupcakes with or without my son. Try it.
What was the biggest mess you ever made while baking?
My mixer was broken so I thought I would use the blender. I forgot to put the lid on the blender. Enough said. Share your story with us.

This is too cool! I just started reading this so I hadn't seen the pancake idea. That is great! I will do both of these at my house. My biggest mess - tripped over the cat with an open carton of eggs. They went everywhere!
ReplyDeletegreat idea - Cole is such a good boy...he was fun to watch with the other kids, just happy playing and enjoying life :) this blog is great!Erinn
ReplyDeleteThis is a good idea! I will have to keep this in mind for when my son gets older so he can help! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I have Mom Tips posted on my blog, too (great minds think alike, I guess!). Come check it out:

Brilliant! I've been using a measuring-cup-with-spout for stuff like this: quiches, bread puddings, muffins. Used a ladle to get the stuff into the cup. I imagine one of these would be helpful for getting the stuff into the bottles! :D
ReplyDeleteNot sure about biggest mess, but I've gotten both wine & beer [separate times] to spray the ceiling over the sink! :D
that sounds like a great idea! My question is how did you get the batter into the baby bottle? Thanks! Cathy in Burbank, CA
ReplyDeleteI use an 8 cup measuring cup. That makes it more like a bowl with a handle and and pouring spout. It was easy to pour in the bottle, even with my 1 year old pulling on my leg to get me to pick her up while I was doing it. I used hot water to rinse it out (until I got around to cleaning it).
