Boo-tiful Banana Treats

blog 045 This fun snack tip came from Kathryn.  Kathryn is a mom of 3 boys and sometimes has trouble getting them to eat healthy foods.  She says that she has learned to compromise and take healthy foods and put a non-healthy twist to them to make them more appealing.  While she does not do this with everything or every time, every now and then it helps and she has learned to pick her battles.
She cuts a banana in half and puts it on a popsicle stick.  She freezes it for about 30 minutes then covers it with vanilla frosting.  She decorates the bananas in fun ways, but for the Halloween season, she uses chocolate chips to make ghost faces.  Kathryn says that you could use white chocolate candy melts that have been melted (instead of frosting) and dunk the banana in the pot, but when the chocolate hardens the covering will break off in pieces when bitten.  At Christmas time, they put green food coloring in the frosting and the boys decorate their banana Christmas trees with candies.  Try it.

Alternative:  If you do not participate in Halloween you can decorate the bananas in any way you choose.  Kathryn’s youngest boy loves to decorate his as a rocket by using Fruit Roll Ups.

What is your favorite way to “ruin” a healthy snack?

  1. My kids drown their raw broccoli in tons of ranch dressing. Not even the light version. :-( They only like the original. It really decreases the healthy snack, but just like your reader, I pick my battles.
Love this idea! We might do this today for a snack.

  2. Megan Says...
I like this although I agree it isn't something I would want to do all the time, but my daughter is so picky that this turning a healthy snack into something a little unhealthy to get her to at least try it make work.

  3. I'm very lucky...both my girls (2 1/2 and 10 1/2 months) *love* fruits and veggies. My 2 1/2 year old has been known (quite frequently) to go back for thirds and fourths for steamed broccoli, plain. She loves to eat fresh fruit and veggies and experiment with new ones. Although she will gobble up her fruits and veggies (without me having to hide them) - I just *love* this idea...so super cute! My 2 1/2 year old is really into "crafts" so this will appeal to the fun factor and will feel like such a special treat. Thanks! I love this blog and am so glad I stumbled upon it!
